Could You be a Youth Worker? 6 Traits You’ll Need.

Do you have a passion for the welfare of young people? If so, you could carve out a rewarding career as a youth team leader, justice case manager, counsellor or justice worker.

We spoke to Life Coach Teymara Wright, who runs Born to be Free, a youth program that addresses awareness of negative psychology and transforms it into a positive, life-affirming relationship with oneself and others.

Here’s what she had to say about her work with young people.

What’s it Like to be a Youth Worker?

Teymara Wright,  life coach and trauma therapist, said working with young people is powerful because she knows her work is making a real difference in their lives.

“The best part of working with young people is knowing that by helping them help themselves, you’re giving them the power to change the course of their life for the better and be the best person they can be.

“For a child with their whole life ahead of them, how amazing is that?

“I’ve worked with many troubled youths, helping them to clear out negative beliefs and fears, and to watch their transformation is so powerful and rewarding,” said Ms Wright.

6 Traits That Make a Successful Youth Worker

  1. Empathy
  2. Reliability
  3. Compassion
  4. Non-judgmental
  5. Great listener
  6. Patience

Empathy and reliability are the most valuable traits when it comes to working with youth, said Ms Wright, but compassion, being non-judgmental, a great listener and patience or also key.

“It’s important to remember, too, that youth don’t want to be saved, they want to be empowered.

“People working with youth need to focus on giving those kids the tools and knowledge they need to help themselves. That’s when true changes will be seen.”
